Nestled on the banks of the Shenandoah River inside a private, gated historic community, it is the rare combination of genuine 100-year-old character and every modern comfort you'd actually want. Thoughtfully renovated with high-end finishes including luxury granite, elevated kitchen and bathroom fixtures, premium furnishings, while holding onto every bit of soul that makes a place feel irreplaceable. In 1921, the Shenandoah River Lodge opened on these same banks, drawing guests from Washington DC, Baltimore, New York, and Philadelphia for decades. Their brochure called it "A Restful Retreat where the River and the Mountains Meet." The main lodge burned down in the 1960s, and the eleven original log cottages were sold off to private owners. River Refuge is one of them. Lovingly preserved, and thoughtfully expanded with an open-concept kitchen and living room addition that opens entirely to the river through floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, so the Shenandoah is never more than a breath away. For over a hundred years, these logs have been breathing river air. The original chinking is still in the walls. The fishing lodge door numbers (6 and 7, before that was a thing!) are still on the bedroom doors. The wood burning stone fireplaces are original. The porches that have overlooked the Shenandoah since before the National Park existed are still here. Bath towels and beach towels are provided for every guest. → The Living Room Two of the three walls are floor-to-ceiling sliding glass that opens completely to the river so the Shenandoah literally becomes part of the room. HOUSE RULES: - Have Fun & enjoy yourself, but do not destroy the space. Please be respectful of our home. - Guests must be at least 21 years of age or older to book or accompanied by a parent or adult. - We are dog friendly (Sorry, No cats), but only allow a maximum of 2 dogs. No aggressive breeds and you assume all liability for damage your pet does to our property and surrounding properties. - Smoking of any kind (tobacco or cannabis) in the home or on the decks is strictly prohibited. This includes vaping. Failure to comply with the non-smoking policy will incur a $2,500 penalty if damage to furniture or any smoking odor is detected. - Recreational drug use at the property is strictly prohibited. Failure to comply incurs a $300 penalty and law enforcement will be notified. - By State Law, PARTIES/EVENTS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED. We must respect the neighbors. Quiet hours are from 10 pm to 8 am, and the home is outfitted with an exterior camera which will notify us of a prohibited gathering. - No more guests than those listed in your reservation are allowed overnight. There is a $100 penalty per person for overnight guests over the max occupancy. Maximum occupancy is enforced by the county and monitored by outdoor cameras on the property. - Renters agree to cover any charge related to damages that occurred during their stay or extra-cleaning charges if needed after their stay (this includes leaving excessive trash in the property). The minimum fine for damages is $250. - Renters may be required to provide a government ID on check-in day or during their stay. - Please avoid moving furniture. - If you accidentally damaged of broke something during your stay, please let us know ASAP so we can remain prepared for future guests.

——— A NOTE ON THE CABIN'S NATURE ——— River Refuge is a 100-year-old log cabin sitting in the woods on the banks of the Shenandoah River. Which means, yes, the occasional spider or wayward bug is part of the deal. We treat the property regularly for pests, and we're not talking anything alarming, but, if you've come this far in the listing, you're probably exactly the kind of guest who finds that charming rather than concerning. The river air, the log walls, the fireflies at dusk, and the occassional spider, it all comes from the same place. Nature here is not an inconvenience. It is the whole point!
